Can you wear black dress to Pakistani wedding?

Attending a wedding is one of the happiest occasions in any culture, with lots of love, joy, and celebrations of a union. If you are going to be a guest at a Pakistani wedding, then you know that weddings are bright, vibrant, extravagant, and colourful, with some events taking place over a number of days. The celebrations will include a range of traditions and customs, but if you’re going to be attending a Pakistani wedding, what is the right thing for you to wear?

Deciding what to wear

Thinking about what to wear to a Pakistani wedding can feel like a bit of a minefield, especially if you have not attended one before or are not acquainted with the customs and traditions of the region. Generally, the attire worn by the wedding party is very extravagant, with the garments and clothing adorned with intricate beading and many embellishments that are intertwined in the fabrics.

One of the colours that is traditionally worn by the bride, and is one of the things that make it different from a traditional western wedding, is the colour red. As a guest, it is advised that you avoid wearing this colour. Female guests in attendance will usually wear a colourful saree, which is a piece of elaborate or adorned fabric draped across the body, going from the shoulders down to the ankles. They may also wear a lengha, which is a long skirt worn with a top and scarf, the latter of which is called a dupatta. Out of respect, when it comes to thinking about what to wear, you should make sure that you do not show too much skin, which is why wearing something traditional can be best. For men, traditionally the wedding attire is a sherwani, which is a long jacket with trousers.

What about colour?

As a guest at a Pakistani wedding, it is advised to avoid wearing red to avoid clashing with the bride. But are there any other rules on colour? For instance, at a traditional western wedding, wearing black is usually something that is frowned upon. The good news is that there are no other restrictions or any traditions that suggest certain colours of Pakistani dresses are ‘bad luck’ or anything else like that. So if you want to wear a black dress to a Pakistani wedding, the answer is yes, you can!

The colour that you choose is up to you for attending a Pakistani wedding, but just remember that it can be a chance to really show off some glitz and glamour. Pakistani weddings are glamorous and elaborate, so accessorizing your dress, no matter the colour that you choose, is important. Jewellery and other embellishments and adornments are definitely going to work well and fit in at any Pakistani wedding.

Importantly, remember to have fun as you celebrate the union of two friends or family members. Weddings are such joyous events, and as long as you feel comfortable in what you are wearing, you will have a wonderful time.
