You’ll be amazed at the number of ideas you can come up with once you start brainstorming.
One woman I met online is now the proprietor of her portrait sketching business. Before she started her own business, she had two other businesses. It’s fantastic to see her work, and it isn’t easy to believe that she hasn’t been doing this for so long. Sometimes, the right business is right in front of you. It’s hard to believe someone would pay you to do something so easy and natural for you.

These people trust you because they have used you before for similar services. They’ll enjoy spreading the word about you and letting others know that your business is open to them.
Take what you already know a lot about and go with it
Perhaps you love your job but want to spend more time at home with your children. Or maybe you want the freedom and satisfaction that comes from owning your own business. You can use your existing skills to start your business. Teachers can become tutors, a secretary can become a virtual executive assistant, and graphic artists can become graphic artists. This is true for photographers, architects, and transcriptionists. It will be surprised how many jobs you have held in the past could be the key to starting your own home-based business.
Are you able to see the need in your community for a specific product or service? Do you want to know why no one has thought of it or started offering it? Why shouldn’t this person be you? There’s no reason you shouldn’t see a need and fill it.
There are many talents, skills, past experiences, hobbies and ideas you have that can be used to make money. This is the year to make your home-based business dreams a reality.
Working from home has many advantages. There is no time clock, no timesheet, and no one to answer about how you spend your time. It is indeed an appealing proposition, but there is likely to be a significant downside: you will probably waste a lot of your time.
My husband spends a lot of time each day creating large spread sheets to track his day. His day is often filled with multiple projects for clients. He works at a large engineering firm. He hates the activity, and I have always considered it a waste of my time. That is until my home-based business took off. I realized that there wasn’t enough time in the day to achieve all my goals.

This has dramatically improved my productivity and decreased my stress levels. You might be thinking that you don’t need a schedule to run your home-based business. But think again.
It was a difficult time for me. My home business was going through growing pains, taking up more time than usual, my four-year-old was in preschool part-time, my spouse wasn’t doing his job at home, and my extended family was facing many difficulties. However, I am old enough to realize that there is no perfect time in life. These are just the problems I have to deal with in this year. These problems will be exchanged for fresher ones next year.
I found five reasons to love the schedule after studying my time and talking with other people who work from home.
- It is easy to spend too much time on non-priority tasks
- It is easy to become distracted or side-tracked from the task at hand
- You may find that unscheduled work can overlap with your free time until it becomes impossible to have any free time.
- You can use your free time to work on essential projects until it overlaps with your work time.
- Focusing your efforts on the highest priority projects will result in more productivity.
This schedule is not something I am the only person who works at home. It was more liberating than it was restrictive. I took part in an online forum that included men and women who had adopted it. You are still in control of the schedule, so you can schedule your time for lunch, afternoon or full-day whenever you like.
It can be challenging to set up your priorities and schedule for the week and day. A friend or partner might help.
